Genevieve’s Place

Los Angeles, CA
Completed Spring 2017

Our client asked us to update and reconfigure a two bedroom condominium in a 1971 Allyn Morris building for her 93 year old mother and her mother’s care givers. The existing unit had good views of Echo Park Lake, but dated finishes gave it a dark and oppressive feeling. All fixtures and finishes were replaced. Genevieve’s bathroom was enlarged and adapted for wheelchair access and to provide space for her care givers to assist her as necessary. Her bathroom is designed as a wet room, there is no shower curb to interfere with Genevieve’s wheelchair. DAS found space within the unit to add a private bathroom for Genevieve’s care givers. Each bathroom features a glass tile wall, Genevieve’s favorite color green in the master bath and orange, as selected by the care givers, in the powder room. Tile by Heath Ceramics and wide plank floors highlight the kitchen and living room. The original kitchen cabinets and appliances were replaced. To aid Genevieve’s memory, a contrasting color was chosen for the door to the refuse & recycling pull out. The floor is set parallel to the center walls of the unit to emphasize the unique geometry of the condominium and to draw the eye toward the lake. The end result is a bright and airy home for Genevieve, in a location that is close to her family.
